the question of K

Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the eleventh of twenty-six interactive magic tricks that will lead you to your fortune as you determine it.

a-to-z_directionsAs per the 21 March intro to this magic act, my assistant, Juliet Berto, handed me the Collins Concise* and blindfold me, whereupon I randomly riffled through the K’s and landed my fingertip randomly on a page. And when Juliet removed the blindfold, there was no doubt: my fingertip was squarely on “Keyhole.”

And while Juliet was offstage conjuring the banner you see at the top of this post, I wildly jotted down what came to me in the Moment Of Meant To Be,** a.k.a. the ether, from whence jewels of genius and inspiration come.

Trouble is, the ether is what it is and does what it does, and we humans, who would harness it and drive it into the ruts of our schedules, have no control over it (fortunately).  All that to say a tidy paragraph of thoughts did not come to me, but the voice of Mary did.  You can still use it in the manner proposed in the sidebar entitled “26 Magic Days of A to Z Directions.”

‘Voice of Mary’

“Did you know, that for every wooden door with a mortise lock, the keyhole leads to an entire world populated by Keyhole People? If you put your eye to the door, you won’t see them, for that is just their portal. Inside the every wooden door with such a portal, the Keyhole Peoples have made an intricate tunnel system, much like ants make in the earth, a vast, secret megalopolis with highways and side roads, all connecting to main chambers and sap and insect gardens and rubbish pits. Did you know that about your wooden doors with mortise locks?

“But fear not, for the Keyhole People are a peaceful people and won’t bother you—you’d not even know they’re there—unless you slam, or otherwise abuse, a door they inhabit. Then they become as Mongol Hordes invading any Human Person who commits such an offense. A Human could run from them and this they know, so they attack on the night of the offense while the Human sleeps. A billions-strong army of them pours into nasal passages, any orifice at all, and while their scissor-like jaws are dismantling the infrastructure of the Human and toting it back to their Door World, they are also emitting an animating foam that expands to fill the Human victim’s body cavity. So the morning after, if you think your loved one who slammed or abused a door is still your loved one, just as they were before, think again, for—”

“Miss Mary, who are you talking to?” Nurse Borden snapped.

“You are one of them,” Mary said, her eyes green and billowing with the atmospheric pressure of oncoming hail.

Nurse Borden knew that look. She hit the panic button just as Mary flew at her with a pair of scissors a-chopping away.

Until next time, look for the magic and you will find it!

**the Moment Of Meant To Be is the instant of lucidness that arises from the contemplation of any given thing and subsequently reveals the essence of it. These Moments will be dashed off in paragraphs of 200 words or less and may be dark or shining, delirious or rational, but each paragraph will stir thoughts and feelings that lead to a meaning unique to you.

  1. It’s probably too late but I’d like to ask Mary if there is a talisman or protection that can be invoked… or humor perhaps, a knock knock joke.

    • Hilarious, loved it! Knock knock jokes… Well, that might work if the Keyhole People liked corn! If not, I’m thinking it could get you killed quicker than maltreating a door!

    • So many rogue thoughts do get left swirling in the wake of imagination!
We have fire resistant doors that look like wood but when you tap on them they sound plastic and hollow…wonder what lives in them!
Thanks for the visit, Liz : )

    • I do too, have been fascinated with them since I can remember. I’ve most especially been interested in the correlation between madness and genius.
Thanks for having a look over here : )

  2. Aaaaaa! Somehow, in your story, Nurse Borden puts me in mind of Lizzie Borden and Nurse Rached in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest!

    • Whoaaaa, Josna, Nurse Ratched is exactly who I was picturing walking in on Mary! Now spooky music’s playing in my head, thankyouverymuch! Oh now I mustn’t be silly, it’s just magic, n’est-ce pas?

      • Doo-doo-doo-doo, as my sister would say, in a spooky voice.Yes, these ideas are in the air, don’t you think? Magic for all of us to avail ourselves of, if we pay attention.

        • Ratched is truly one of the most bedeviling literary monsters ever created! I wish, in the movie, that she had come to the same end that she did in the novel!
Thanks for coming by, Elle : )

    • Oh thank you, my dear – was going to have Mr. Mailer over for a posthumous guest post on this one–K quite obviously being for Killer and all–with his “The Shortest Novel of Them All” (a brilliant seven sentences) but then this Mary creeped out of my head…
